Sports Medicine

Centuries ago, Buddhist and Taoist monks in most traditions were also healers in addition to practitioners of meditative and martial art techniques. They developed many herbal formulas for the treatment of “strike and fall” injuries resulting from martial arts competition. This tradition has formed the basis of the treatment of injuries and pain in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

In addition to acupuncture, other TCM modalities include:

Herbal liniments for external application

Commonly known as “Dit Da Jow” , these liniments are very effective for acute and chronic pain conditions.

Bleeding acupuncture points

Using a three-edged needle to puncture a point to let a few drops of blood out. This is very effective in injuries with severe stabbing pain in a specific location.

Cupping

Traditional glass fire-cups or modern plastic suction cups are very useful in old injuries and chronic pain of long duration.

Moxibustion

Using the gentle heat of burning artemisia herb to warmly move the stagnant Qi and Blood that becomes congested in the injured area. Excellent therapy for areas of the body that have become weakened by trauma.

Chinese Medical Massage

Also called Tui Na or acupressure, this manipulative technique can unblock the obstructed channels of acupuncture due to sprains, strains, contusions and bruises.

Electroacupuncture

Effective for certain conditions and for acupuncture anesthesia, this technique involves stimulating acupuncture needles with a mild current in order to reduce pain.

Advanced acupuncture techniques

Master Tung’s acupuncture, Dr. Tan’s Balance Method, Dr. Chen’s I Ching Acupuncture and Dr. Robert Chu’s Optimal Acupuncture are famous for relief of pain almost immediately after insertion of the needles.
